The Event: Review

Date: Sunday May 24th 2015

Time: 11:00-17:00

Location: Palette Hall, Tottori City

Cheer for Fukushima welcomed hundreds of people from the local community to experience an event, embracing international culture and hosted by a team of international volunteers, all in support of raising money for Iwaki Ikueisha. Early indications show that over 150,000 Yen (£800) was raised on the day through food sales and donation boxes.

Cafe Cheer offered people the chance to try a selection of international dishes from Jamaica, Mexico, Korea, USA and New Zealand whilst Culture Booths from five different countries captured the imagination of young children who were given the opportunity to take part in a variety of different cultural activities.

Throughout the day, Tottori's best performers took to the stage to compliment the cultural fesivities. A beautiful rendition of Himawari sung by Seiki Elementary School's 6th grade students opened the event. This was followed by a humuorus magic show by the popular Mr. Gelato. To conclude the morning session, Akira Belly Dance Group performed a selection of dances then helped everyone engage in the first of the day's two "Cheers" for Fukushima.

The first 'Cheer' brought those inside the Hall together to make as much noise as possible in support of Iwaki Ikueisha and all of those affected by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The atmosphere was electric as Palette erupted with loud cheers and clapping. The challenge was then on to see if the day's final 'Cheer' could surpass the first one.

Preceding the final 'Cheer', more talented acts entertained the audience in a packed afternoon session. 30-strong chorus singers named Musik Theatre Group Tottori opened their performance with a flash mob of Les Miserables much to the surprise of those in attendance. The group's presence and personality delighted everyone watching. Children's music group Jungle Gym, led by the 'Japanese Jack Black' (School of Rock) had the kids and volunteers on their feet dancing to their own take of kids' classics. Do-Hip dance studio provided a fitting final performace at the event with three hip-hop dances, their own cheer and an umbrella dance.

The day's proceedings ended with the second 'Cheer' which all of the Do-Hip dancers took part in, helping to create as much noise as possible, rivalling the ferocity of the first 'Cheer'. Both of the 'Cheers' encapsulated the day's positive atmosphere and energy in support of a wonderful cause.

The success of the event exceeded expectations and can be attributed to a long list of people. First and foremost thanks must go to a dedicated and hard-working team of volunteers from around the world who currently reside in Tottori Prefecture. In addition, local sponsors made the event possible in addition to a number of key figures behind the scenes. The event was a huge team effort and after months of hard work and dedication, Tottori city was treated to a fantastic event.
